Jessica Lindsey Leading All Area Hitters

Sandburg’s No. 1 task in Tuesday’s showdown will be to stop Lincoln-Way East’s Jessica Lindsey, who pound for pound is well on her way to being the Southland’s most prodigious 2013 hitter.

 

The 6-foot right side has 345 kills in 33 matches for the Griffins. Maria Brown, of Lincoln-Way Central, has the second-highest kill total with 294.

 

In a big conference win Thursday against Lockport, Lindsey put the ball down 15 times. In Saturday’s championship match loss to Lincoln-Way Central, Lindsey was a standout with nine kills.

Lorenz, a 6-foot-2 senior middle hitter, had 52 kills, 22 blocks, 17 digs and nine aces for the week. Saturday, she led the Warriors to a 31-29, 25-23 victory over Mount Assisi in the championship match at the Rich South Invitational with 11 kills and three blocks.

Ultimate alum Kara Bates goes pro

Kara Bates thought her volleyball career was over at the conclusion of her final college game at Ball State University last fall. As it turns out, her time on the hardwood isn’t finished just yet. The older sister of Kelli Bates and a 2009 graduate of Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School, Bates is preparing to make her way to Europe to begin her professional volleyball career for Amiens-Longueau Métropole, located 90 miles north of Paris in Amiens, France. The squad is part of a French professional league that has teams throughout the country.

The Boilermakers offset the Vikings' height with a balanced offensive attack and even stronger defense. Kelli Bates and Shaniya Falkner each had six kills, while Jordan Themer added five. Themer also had three blocks for Bradley-Bourbonnais, which tallied nine in the match.

Joseph Smalzer Named First Team All-America by Volleyball Magazine

Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball player Joseph Smalzer (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist) collected another piece of hardware as he was named First Team All-America by Volleyball Magazine. Smalzer is one of just two players outside the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) to earn a spot on the 10-man first team, which was determined through a vote by coaches, media members and sports information directors from around the country.
